Who uses Sema

Different sectors, the same problem.

Whether they are customers, patients, parents, members or respondents, they are already on WhatsApp, and the conversation is happening on somebody’s personal phone with no record of it. What changes by sector is what you send and what you have to be able to prove afterwards.

Financial services

SACCOs, microfinance, insurers and agent networks

How it works for them

TodayStatements and renewal notices go out by bulk SMS at a flat rate whether anyone reads them. If a member disputes being contacted, there is no proof they ever agreed.

With SemaStatements, reminders, renewals and login codes on WhatsApp, sent only to members whose opt-in is recorded. Repayments are collected by M-Pesa from the same conversation, into your own paybill, and confirmed with M-Pesa before they show as paid.

Health

Clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and labs

How it works for them

TodayReception rings patients one at a time to confirm tomorrow’s appointments, and the ones who do not pick up still do not turn up.

With SemaA reminder template the day before. Whoever replies opens a 24-hour window to answer in, and the answer lands in a shared inbox instead of on one receptionist’s handset. A deposit or a bill can be paid there by M-Pesa, too.

Education

Schools, colleges and training providers

How it works for them

TodayFee balances go home on a printed slip that never arrives, and following up means a phone call per parent.

With SemaA fee notice to the parent list as an approved template, the replies landing in one shared inbox, and the fee paid by M-Pesa from the parent’s own conversation into the school’s paybill.

Research and M&E

Research firms, NGOs and monitoring teams

TodayEnumerators work from personal WhatsApp. The responses live on their handsets, and when someone leaves the fieldwork leaves with them.

With SemaOne workspace the whole team answers from, replies kept where the study can export them, and consent recorded per respondent. Sema distributes and keeps the record; it is not a form builder.

Legal

Advocates, law firms and conveyancers

TodayHearing dates and case updates go from an advocate’s personal line, clients ring the office for status, and none of it is on the matter file.

With SemaHearing reminders and document requests from the firm’s number, every exchange kept where the matter can be reviewed, and a record of when each client agreed to be contacted. Conversations are isolated to your workspace by the database itself, not by a setting.

Property

Landlords, agents and managing companies

TodayRent is chased by phone every month, and a maintenance request sent to a caretaker’s WhatsApp is forgotten by the time anyone is free to act on it.

With SemaA rent notice to every tenant on the first, sent as an approved template, and the rent paid by M-Pesa from the tenant’s reply. Maintenance requests land in a shared inbox where they can be assigned, shared out in turn and closed with a reason.

Agriculture and cooperatives

Producer cooperatives, agri-dealers and aggregators

TodayCollection times, prices and payment confirmations travel by word of mouth and the chairman’s phone, so half the members hear late and the rest hear wrong.

With SemaOne announcement to the member list in the language they use, questions answered by whoever is free, and each payment confirmation recorded against the farmer it belongs to.

Commerce and events

Shops, traders, distributors and organisers

How it works for them

TodayOrders arrive on three staff phones, nobody can say what was promised to whom, and payment means sending a till number and chasing screenshots.

With SemaOne number the whole team answers, products sent from your catalog, the cart arriving as an order in the thread, and the order paid by M-Pesa into your own till before anything ships.

Messaging a list is the part most tools stay quiet about. Meta requires an opt-in and Kenya’s Data Protection Act requires you to be able to prove one. Sema records when and how each contact agreed and handles STOP automatically, which is what makes sending to members and respondents workable rather than risky.

Not sure which one you are?

If your people are on WhatsApp, the answer is usually yes. Connect a number and answer real conversations before you pay for anything.
